Planting Guide

A Few Simple Steps to Ensure Success

Planting one of our trees or bushes isn’t rocket science, but to ensure you give your plants the best chance of survival you need to follow some simple rules. Whether your Florae Farms purchase comes in a container, wrapped in burlap or bare rooted, here are some simple steps you should follow.

 Container Tree/Shrub

  1. Choose the right location for the tree. Consider light conditions and soil moisture.
  2. The hole for the tree should be two to three times larger than the container. Make sure that the hole is deep enough so that the tree collar will be just above the ground level.
  3. Take the tree out of the container and if the roots are rootbound make an X in the roots with a knife or a pruner. This helps the roots to grow deeper into the ground rather than growing in circles.
  4. Place the tree in the hole and cover the roots with soil. The top of the root ball should not be below ground level.
  5. If desired, put a stake beside the tree and attach it with string to the trunk. This is to keep it straight and prevent it from falling over. The stake can be removed once the roots are developed, this could take up to two years after the tree has been planted.
  6. Water the tree at least twice a week, especially in the first year. The soil must be moist, but not soggy.
  7. If desired, place mulch around the tree, as this will help to protect the roots from extreme weather conditions.

Bare Root Tree

  1. Choose the right location for the tree. Consider light conditions and soil moisture.
  2. Before planting, it is encouraged to put the tree in a pail of water for about 10 minutes to soak the roots.
  3. The hole for the tree should be two to three times larger than the root ball. Make sure that the hole is deep enough so that the tree collar will be just above the ground level.
  6. Give the tree plenty of water (three to four times a week, weather depending) especially in the first couple months. The soil must be moist but not soggy.
  7. If desired, place mulch around the tree, as this will help to protect the roots from extreme weather conditions.

Ball & Burlap

  1. Choose the right location for the tree. Consider light conditions and soil moisture.
  2. The hole for the tree should be two to three times larger than the root ball. Make sure that the hole is deep enough so that the tree collar will be just above the ground level.
  3. Carefully put the tree in the hole without the root ball falling apart.
  4. Starting from the bottom cut the burlap away and remove the burlap as much as possible.
  5. Cover the roots with soil. The top of the root ball should not be below ground level.
  6. Give the tree plenty of water (two to three times a week, weather depending) especially in the first couple months. The soil must be moist but not soggy.
  7. If desired, place mulch around the tree, as this will help to protect the roots from extreme weather conditions.
